How does a mini-split work?
Like traditional air source heat pumps, mini split systems consist of two primary components: an outdoor compressor and condenser, and an indoor air handling unit. The indoor and outdoor units are connected by a conduit that contains the power cable, refrigerant lines, suction tubing, and condensate drain.
What are the advantages of a mini-split unit?
- Mini split systems are valued for their compact size and their ability to provide flexible zoning for heating and cooling individual rooms. Many models allow up to four indoor air handling units to connect to a single outdoor unit, creating multiple zones. The exact number depends on the heating or cooling demands of the building and each space, which are influenced by insulation quality and air sealing. Each zone has its own thermostat, so you only condition the areas being used. This helps reduce energy use and lowers operating costs.
- Ductless mini split systems are typically simpler to install than many other space conditioning options. In most cases, connecting the indoor and outdoor units only requires a three inch opening through an exterior wall for the conduit. Indoor air handling units can be wall mounted, ceiling suspended, recessed into a drop ceiling, or installed as floor standing models. Most indoor units are only about seven inches deep and feature a sleek, modern appearance. Many models also include a remote control, making it easy to operate the system when the unit is mounted high on a wall or suspended from the ceiling.
